Lesson Title: Emergence in STEM Careers Related Lessons: What is STEM? Grade: 8th Grade Unit: Introduction to STEM
Standards: TEK 1E: Compare and contrast engineering, science and technology careers Objectives: The student will identify factors that have lead to an increase in STEM careers. ISTE NETS-s: Critical Thinking, Research and Information, Communication and Collaboration, Creativity and Innovation
Before Class: Students will gather their findings from the previous session to complete today’s assignment. During Class:
Time
Instructional Activities
5-10 minutes
Students will use the beginning of class to find any additional information that is needed to complete their PowerPoint.
45-50 minutes
Students will create an interactive PowerPoint presentation with their group that explains at least three factors that have lead to the emergence of STEM careers over the last 10 years. Each presentation will require a title slide, a slide with an explanation of what STEM is, a slide with a list of careers within the field, a slide for each factor on that has led to an increase in these careers and a references slide. Students will submit the assignment by emailing it to the teacher by the end of class.
Notes: Students are encouraged to use the skills that they have learned previously about how to create an effective and appropriate PowerPoint presentation.
On-going Assessments: Teacher will monitor and assist throughout to ensure that students are staying on task and to answer any questions that students may have as to how to complete the assignment.
Accommodations: Additional time and assistance will be given to students as needed.
Lesson Reflections/Notes: Students will have to focus on using the time given to meet the content requirements for the presentation rather than focusing on the look, animations, transitions, etc. of the PowerPoint.
